About The Exams

Welcome to the Concordia Seminary site for the Entry Level Competency Exams (ELCE).

Depending on the program for which you have applied, there are up to five exams that make up the ELCE requirements: Old Testament, New Testament, Christian Doctrine, Hebrew, and Greek.

Each exam has 100 questions and you will be given 75 minutes to complete each exam. The exam questions were developed by professors from the Concordia University System and both Seminaries. These exams are used by the Seminary to show you have a basic understanding of each content area and are well prepared to continue your studies at the graduate level.

Prior to the actual exam, you will be asked 10 demographic questions. Your answers to these questions help us as we work to improve the ELCE exams and the various programs offered at Concordia Seminary. The 75 minute clock will not start until after you have answered the demographic questions.

At the end of the exam, you will be given your score. This score will also be automatically forwarded to the Admissions Office of Concordia Seminary – Saint Louis.

God’s richest blessings as you take these exams and prepare to begin your studies at Concordia Seminary.
